Scarlet Firethorn (Pyracantha
coccinea)

The Scarlet Firethorn belongs to the Rosaceae family
and is a prickly evergreen shrub which grows in
fertile well-drained soils in temperate climates.
It is distributed in southern Europe and western
Asia as far as Iran.
It is a sturdy upright shrub then arched at the top
and is bushy and thick.
The leaves are dark green and glossy on the upper
surface and lighter on the lower surface. They are
entire and not lobate, alternating between
elliptical and ovate elliptical, pointed and finely
serrated.
The flowers are small, white and thick, and blossom
from May to June.
They have bright coral red orbicular berries which
are pea-sized and abundant.
It is a rustic species suitable for the creation of
defensive and ornamental hedges.
Their fruits are particularly loved by blackbirds
and thrushes and can last the whole winter.
