GEOLOGICAL AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL
DESCRIPTION
Bosco di Tecchie (Serre di Burano)
The area in question is located in the north-western
margins of the borough of Cantiano (PU), in the
district of “Serre di Burano”.
The
wood covers about 180 hectares, and is mainly
covered by Turkey oak and beech woods.
The area is morphologically characterised by a
double line up of small ridges which culminate in
the “Pian della Serra” mountain and which are broken
up by a series of small narrow valleys of the
“serre”. These are cut into the original geological
formation of sandstone of Monte Vicino, made up of
alternating marlstone and sandstone formations which
were laid down in a small basin supplied by a flood
creek. The thickness varies from 600 metres to 1400
metres and involves stratified rocks in large banks
(early-mid Miocene).
This type of marlstone comes at the top of the
Marnoso-Arenacea formation made up mainly of
turbidite formations organised in pelitico-arenacee
and arenacee lithofacies, deriving from southern
quandrants. Materials were put into the basin
through a structural canal and then distributed
towards NW and SE, and then they crammed themselves
into a narrow stretched out depression forming a
“flood cone”.
The area presents a state of elevated environmental
integrity marked by a remarkable wealth of flora and
fauna which create particular interest of natural
importance for the province.
