The Beech Trail

Duration: 70 minutes.

Level of difficulty: Difficult.

The Beech trail penetrates the core of the Bosco di Tecchie park, which is made up of the monumental beechwood. This singular type of wood is an extraordinary example of natural equilibrium and the evolution of a complex ecosystem in which biological rhythms proceed in accordance with cycles induced by climate, morphology and soil composition. The mature beechwood, rich in dead wood mass such as this, represents one of the most interesting forests in Europe.
In this wood the European Beech, able to withstand the cold and frost as well as dry summers, is accompanied by the European Ash, the mountain maple Acer pseudoplatanus (sycamore maple) and the Turkey oak, whilst the European Elder, the European Cornel and the Checker tree grow in the undergrowth. At various points of the trail you can see signs of animal life, such as the entrance to the burrows of foxes and badgers, the tracks of hoofs on leaves and parts of dead trees evidently used by woodpeckers.
